The beginning

Our first baby, Jiya was born on 1st November 2008. Our tiny little princess was just perfect with her 10 little fingers and 10 little toes.
On the 2nd day when the nurse came in to get her hearing tested, we couldn't have cared less. We were pretty sure that she would pass the test and we would go home as one happy family. However, that was not to be. She didnt pass the test but we were assured that this was just fluid build up and will clear in a couple of weeks. There was no reason to not believe this since we had no history of hearing loss in our families and my pregnancy was quite uncomplicated.
When she didn't pass the hearing test at 2 weeks of age we were referred to an ENT. We had 2 OAEs and 3ABRs in the next month which Jiya failed. But it was finally determined that she had a severe to profound hearing loss at a sedated ABR done when she was about 3 months old.
We immediately got a new pair of hearing aids for her - Phonak Una. She didn't really recieve any help from them.
She was evaluated for cochlear implants and qualified immediately. The minute we knew that there was something out there to help her hear, we knew that was road we wanted to take. Jiya was implanted on the right ear at 10 months (activated at 11 months) and the left ear at 13.5 months (activated at 14.5 months). She has Nucleus 5 on both her ears. This blog is to document her progress and share it with other CI kiddos.
